UPDATE (7/7/2016): Just one day after a decomposing body was found inside a garbage can in a Rockford apartment, the coroner confirms the remains are human, and progress is being made toward identifying the person.

“There are some things that we already learned, but they are part of the investigation. So we are making progress,” said Sue Fidducia.

Fidducia says it can take anywhere from days to years, to identify a body in this kind of condition, and experts will be needed to help with the process.

“When a person is badly decomposed, that’s pretty hard to make a visual (identification),” said Fiduccia. “We’re very fortunate in this day and age of forensic sciences, that we have available to us a forensic pathologist, a forensic odontologist.”

Despite only recovering bones and liquid in the trash can, fiduccia says a specialist can still uncover details about the body.

“They can tell us what the height, the weight of the person, the race, the sex, and lots of times they can even tell us whether they were left-handed or right handed, just by looking at the bones,” Fiduccia explained.

Meanwhile, the man who rents the apartment where the body was found, 54-year-old Bradley Carlson, appeared in court today, charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $500,000.

Carlson was convicted of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl back in 1996, and has a long history of being convicted for more minor offenses, everything from drug possession to petty theft.

He will be back in court on August 11th.

UPDATE (7/6/2016): Investigators in hazmat suits carefully removed a garbage can from an apartment in the 600 block of Market St. after police discover human remains inside it. Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says the body is badly decomposed, and it will take several days to identify the victim.

“We are seeing some bones, some liquid, there’s various other things we’re seeing in this garbage can,” explained Fidducia. “At this point, (we) don’t know whether it’s male, female. I do believe it’s human. Every indication, everything that I’ve seen is indicating to me that it is human.”

Al Escobar lives in the apartment just underneath where the body was discovered. He says he arrived home to a hectic scene Tuesday night, and watched as police arrested the man living there.

“When I got here, he was in the squad car, in one of the squad cars. And obviously he’s not back in his house,” said Escobar.

Escobar says he knows the man as Bradley Carlson. According to court records, a man with that name lives at the address in question. He was convicted back in 1996 of criminal sexual abuse of a child, and has been back in court more than once since then for violating rules linked to the sex offender registry.

Records also show Carlson was arrested last night on an unrelated charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police say more information will be released as it becomes available.

Rockford Police are on the scene of a death investigation in the 600 block of Market Street. Authorities found an unidentifiable, partially decomposed body inside an apartment there.

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says the resident of the apartment is a hoarder, and that they uncovered human bones inside a garbage can at the apartment.
