Coroner releases updated number of overdose deaths in Winnebago County in 2018

A report from the Winnebago County Coroner shows just how serious the drug problem is in the Rockford area.

There have been 69 overdose deaths in 2018. The majority of those are from fentanyl, heroin or cocaine. Men are the most common victims, and people ages 40 to 49 the hardest hit.

Here’s a closer look at the numbers as of July:

2018 drug overdoses – age

  • 30 to 39 – 14 deaths
  • 40 to 49 – 16 deaths
  • 50 to 59 – 15 deaths
  • 60 to 69 – 9 deaths
  • 70 to 79 – 13 deaths
  • 80 to 89 – 2 deaths

2018 drug overdoses – gender

  • Male – 43 deaths
  • Female – 26 deaths

2018 drug overdoses – drug*

  • Morphine – 9 deaths
  • Heroin – 35 deaths
  • Fentanyl – 42 deaths
  • Ethanol – 8 deaths
  • Cocaine – 23 deaths
  • All others (16 different drugs) – 25 deaths

2018 drug overdoses – race

  • White – 51 deaths
  • Black – 15 deaths
  • Hispanic – 3 deaths

*The total number of drugs resulting in death surpasses the 69 total death count due to the fact that many of the victims’ deaths are attributed to more than one drug in their system.
