Chicago may get all the national headlines for its high murder and crime rates, but five other Illinois cities are more dangerous when it comes to residents being victimized by violent crime according to a new analysis of 2014 FBI crime data by the website ‘Law Street.’ That includes Rockford, which came in as the 3rd most dangerous in Illinois.
Rockford came in behind East St. Louis and Harvey, IL, two cities which often escape scrutiny in the analysis of crime data because each is so small. Both have populations of about 25,000 people, yet the violent crime rate in East St. Louis per 100,000 people is triple that of Rockford’s, with an astounding 27 murders in 2014. Harvey’s violent crime rate is slightly higher than Rockford’s.
Rockford’s violent crime rate was 1235 per 100,000 in 2014. Similarly sized Joliet, by contrast, had a violent crime rate of 335 per 100,000.
