“As soon as I found out I was like, ‘yeah I’m going!’. I’m going to get there as soon as I possibly can to get my picture with the trophy,” said Cubs fan and Hibbett Sports manager Matt Bowen.
Bowen and thousands of others across the stateline are ready to see something they have been waiting a lifetime to see. The Chicago Cubs will be bringing their championship memento to Freeport in January.
“This is a Cubs town,” said Bowen. “This a hotbed of Chicago Cubs Fans. Freeport seems to have a lot of Cubs fans, and besides that a lot of baseball fans,” said Denny Garkey, Vice President of Little Cubs Field. Garkey was able to convince the Cubs organization to bring the trophy to the Pretzel City.
“First thing after they won, I sent an email. They go, ‘yep, we’re looking into that, we will let you know when they’re going to bring it’, and they honor their promises,” said Garkey.
The championship euphoria has ceased to end for fans in Freeport as they were still looking for championship gear on sale at Hibbett Sports to make the perfect stocking stuffer.
“They keep coming out with cool new stuff for Christmas, a bunch of different new shirts and hats as well,” said Bowen.
Garkey said that the ability to bring the trophy to Freeport is just a thank you to residents who helped build Little Cubs Field. “This is payback for not only 108 years of waiting, but helping us build the field, it all works together and we really feel there are more really good things to come in the future,” said Garkey.
The trophy will be at the Masonic Temple from 11 to 1 p.m. on January 8th.
