A Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy is hurt and the dog that lunged at him is dead.
Police said a pitbull attacked the deputy Thursday afternoon, forcing a split-second decision to keep the situation from escalating any further.
Winnebago County Animal Services removed the dog’s body from the home in the 1100 block of Sunset Avenue.
Officials told Eyewitness News that several deputies forced their way into the home in a drug raid. That’s when they said a pitbull broke out of its cage and latched onto a deputy’s leg. Another officer then shot the dog to stop the attack, but the bullet also grazed the deputy’s leg.
Sheriff Gary Caruana says there was no way to subdue the dog peacefully.
“It just happened so fast, and once they latch on, I believe it was a pitbull, once they latch on, their jaws are pretty strong, and he had him pretty good on the leg, so there’s really no way that we could,” explained Sheriff Caruana. “Obviously, if we could, we would.”
The deputy was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital for treatment and he’s expected to be okay.
The sheriff said drugs and other contraband were removed from the home during the search. So far, no arrests have been made.
