Doctors say its not too late to get flu shot ahead of peak sickness season

News

Local doctors say it has been a mild start to flu season this year, but doctors say there’s still time.

OSF Saint Anthony’s Dr. Noah Simon warns that December through February is the peak time for the virus.

Doctors say getting the vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick, but it can reduce the severity and helps prevent death.

Simon adds, even those who say they don’t get sick should get a flu shot.

“Maybe you’re just one of the lucky ones that hasn’t got sick yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the flu, later,” Simon said. “If you’re not going to get the flu shot to help protect yourself, get the flu shot to help protect others around you.”

On top of the flu shot, doctors say you can help prevent the spread of the flu by washing your hands regularly.

If you do get sick, doctors advise that you stay home and away from crowds to prevent spreading the illness.
