A warrant is issued for a man who helped a wanted murder suspect escape from police.

On Friday, officers recognized the passenger in a car in the area of S. Main Street and Loomis Avenue in Rockford as Coley Carwell, 15, who is wanted for the November 2016 murder of Jamario Crawford.

Police tried to pull the vehicle over, but it took off. At one point during the chase, the driver of the car drove at a police squad car but the officer managed to get out of the way. The chase continued until the vehicle was lost heading eastbound on Charles at 23rd Street.

That vehicle was later recovered that evening, abandoned. Police used it to learn the identity of the driver – Bennie Griffith, 21, of Rockford. He was subsequently charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and aggravated assault to a police officer.

Coley Crawford remains wanted for first degree murder. His photo was not provided due to his age.
