The man who hit a Belvidere police officer with his vehicle Wednesday evening has been identified.
He is Cortez Hill, 23, of Rockford. Hill was pulled over by the officer following an investigation at a home in the 100 block of Buchanan Street in Belvidere. He was wanted for questioning as a witness in that investigation.
Hill fled the scene before he could be questioned, driving at the officer who pulled him over, hitting the officer with his car. The officer then opened fire on Hill to protect himself and bystanders in the area.
The suspect continued to flee in his vehicle until he crashed at E. State and Bell School in Rockford. After a short foot chase, he was taken into custody.
The officer was treated for his injuries at a local hospital on Wednesday and released.
Hill is being held at the Boone County Jail. He faces three outstanding warrants.
The Winnebago Boone Integrity Task Force is investigating the shots fired by the officer, as is standard procedure when an officer uses deadly force. Both the Boone County State’s Attorney and Winnebago State’s Attorney are investigating the entire incident, and further charges could be issued against Hill.
