East holds pep rally as basketball team heads to state for first time since 1978

East High School held a pep rally for their basketball team as they prepared to head downstate Thursday.

Students and staff packed the gym to wish them luck.

East has won 34 games this season, the most in the school’s history.

The school will be making its first appearance in the state tournament since 1978.

Coach Roy Sackmaster says the support they’ve received has been tremendous.

“It’s been a pretty fun ride for us and the guys on the team,” he said. “It’s been overwhelming, the amount of support we’ve gotten from the community, not just from the East High School community, but the Rockford community. And just to show that support before the big weekend, it means a lot for us, and I know it means a lot for our guys on the team.”

The E-Rabs will play in the state semifinals Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Evanston.
