Stateline residents celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King’s message and legacy.
They sang and danced at Emanuel Lutheran Church on Rockford’s east side Monday morning. MInisters discussed the problems facing the Stateline and the struggle that continues 50 years after the Civil Rights movement.
“We have inequalities in this country” says Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-34th). “The gap between the rich and the poor is greater than ever, yet we’re still fighting for the minimum wage. In many communities, including this one, we have debates whether poor people should live in certain parts of town.”
Rep. Litesa Wallace (D-67th) spoke at Monday’s celebration as well. She called the community into action. “My challenge to you is not to think about those words, ‘I have a dream’ because dreams occur when you are asleep” said Wallace. “My challenge to you is to think about visions and foresight and manifest those things because that only occurs when you’re awake.”
