Education Matters at Rockford Christian

News

Jan Term- It’s a week at Rockford Christian, a time when when students pick one unique morning and afternoon class.

They can choose from a variety of courses …and they’re not your typical school subjects. They offer everything from Basketball Officiating to Candy Chemistry. Rockford Christian Principal Drew Popejoy says,”Doing things that would be outside the normal scope of school. Giving kids a chance to really have fun with education.  Kind of trick them into learning about things cause it’s things that they really like and they’re into.”

Sophomore Cecily Holliday is taking Sign Language and a Life Skills class that she believes will help her be better prepared for college. “We did financial yesterday. Balancing a check book. Doing domesticating classes and cooking. Your home life, like laundry and stuff. It gets you so prepared. I’ve learned so much from them.”

Alex Mezny calls Jan Term useful and lots of fun. “We’re using a game called the Kerble Space Program that actually uses, it uses real life physics to launch the rockets.”

Teachers, like John Deery, say its the unique subject matter than makes Jan Term a week students look forward to. “With the variety of classes that we have and the internships and the trips. There’s so much to offer that the kids generally get excited about being able to choose. It’s total autonomy for them.”

Principal Popejoy says, “It’s a great way to come back and get the semester started.” Students also have the option of doing job shadowing or going on an international mission trip the week of Jan Term.
