Eight Honored After Riverview Ice House Rescue

The Rockford Park District recognized those who helped save a man who had a heart attack during a hockey practice.

Five men received the Gold Medal of Valor and three others received certificates for their actions.  The group, made of up parents and Junior IceHogs team members, sprang into action when they saw Dave Buse collapse in the stands of the Riverview Ice House back in May.  Tom Breitfuss, a coach of the Junior IceHogs, helped perform CPR and used a defibrillator to keep Buse alive until emergency crews arrived.

“It’s just better to know that he’s okay,” said Breitfuss.  “More than anything, I think it’s better that we had people there that knew what they were doing before… the firemen got there.”

Breitfuss is a fireman for Loves Park.  Buse is doing well now, but during the health scare, he had no vital signs for at least 15 minutes.
