The family of 36-year-old Steven Dummer met outside the courtroom at the Winnebago County Justice Center after his arraignment Tuesday afternoon.
Dummer is facing charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Police say he fired shots on the second floor of Crusader Health Monday afternoon.
Dummer’s daughter, Jasmine Dummer, says, “My dad is the best man in the world. My dad never meant to hurt anybody.”
The Dummer family says Steven has suffered from club foot since he was born, and that’s caused him severe leg pains, which has put him on disability.
They say he’s a patient at Crusader, and has had disagreements over medicine that doctors there have prescribed to him, because it makes him sick.
His sister-in-law, Jessica Monto, says, “That’s the problem that he’s having, he’s telling the doctor that these medicines are making him worse.”
Monto says Dummer never intended to shoot anyone. “He intentionally went in there to hurt himself,” She said.
His family says Dummer has been suffering from depression, and has talked about committing suicide. They feel he belongs in a mental health facility, instead of jail.
Monto says, “I hate to say it, (but) I think my brother-in-law is going through something, and maybe it’s mental health. Maybe it’s depression, it’s something. My brother in law would never do this.”
