Family of Five Killed in House Fire in Rock Falls

A family of five who died in a house fire in Rock Falls early Wednesday morning has been identified.

The fire started around 5 a.m. at the home at 414 2nd Avenue.

The Rock Falls Fire Department received a 911 hang up call from the home about two minutes before other neighbors began reporting the fire.

When crews arrived the first floor was on fire and heavy smoke was coming from the whole house.  Fire fighters made several attempts to reach the second floor but were driven back.

Once the fire was knocked down all five victims were found dead in their second-floor bedrooms.

Today the Whiteside County Coroner identified the victims as Patrick Hopkins, 61, his wife Mary, 49, and their children Maggie, 26, Donovan, 16, and Katie Jo, 13.

The preliminary cause of death is believed to be smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
