The body of Jeremy Richman, 49, was found at the Newtown Town Hall on Monday morning. Richman’s daughter, Avielle, was among the 26 students and staff killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
According to police, Richman’s death appears to be a suicide, but the chief medical examinder is investigating the exact cause of death.
“This is a heartbreaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole, the police department’s prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time,” said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde, a spokesman for the department.
Richman is the founder of the Avielle Foundation, whose mission is to reduce violence in American communities.
Richman’s death is the third suicide connected to mass-shootings in the last week.
Sydney Aiello, 19, who survived the Parkland, Flordia mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, took her own life on March 17th.
A second student from Marjor Stoneman, whose name was not released, killed himself on Saturday, March 23rd.
