Few Witnesses in South Beloit Death Investigation

News

Police have not made much progress in a South Beloit death investigation.

Investigators are hitting a big obstacle as they try to figure out what happened.

“We have to find out who she is first before we can make any determinations to how she got there,” said South Beloit Chief Dean Stiegemeier.

South Beloit Police investigating the mysterious discovery of a woman’s body found Wednesday afternoon in a grassy area behind the Road Ranger off Interstate 90.

“The individual who found her was a trucker who had actually gotten out of his vehicle to do a preliminary check before he left for the afternoon, and that’s when he discovered her,” said Stiegemeier. “Other than that, there are no other known witnesses at this time.”

Chief Stiegemeier said the trucker found the victim face down and fully clothed.

And given the unusual circumstances, he says nothing is being ruled out.

“The fact that there is a deceased individual in a field is not normal,” said Stiegemeier. “So we’re looking at every avenue that we possibly can.”

Stiegemeier says there’s only one witness in the case, which is making the investigation that much more difficult.

“Truck stops do pose a little challenge because they are very transient and the people are coming and going at all hours of the night,” he said.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office says the woman’s autopsy is complete.

We’ll bring you those results as soon as they become available.
