Fewer Students Applying for Financial Assistance

Illinois' MAP Grant Program Out of Money_-5711541823800849457

Fewer students are applying for Monetary Award Program grants.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission says applications are down about 13%.

320,000 students are eligible for the assistance.  The Monetary Award Program (MAP) provides grants, which do not need to be repaid, to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need, based on the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The comptroller says, unless a budget bill is passed, MAP Grants and higher education will run out of funding next month.
