The tower was the last piece of of the Clock Tower Resort left standing after the demolition of the hotel, which was begun on April 16th.
The developer, Ringland-Johnson construction, says it hopes to put in a new hotel with restaurants and retail shops. There's also talk about putting in a casino, but that can only happen if the State signs off on legislation to expand gambling.
"It was always planned to come down," said Brent Johnson, President of Ringland-Johnson, of the Clock Tower's demolition. "I think that was more hearsay, rumors [to let it stand.] Our plan was always to clear the site and plan for new development. New development could include expansion of gaming, if that happens in Springfield, hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations..."
The Clock Tower was condemned and closed down in April of 2017, following numerous building code violations.
Prior, in December of 2016, the hotel was the scene of a shooting in which 5 people were shot and one person, Marcello Brown, 23, was killed.
