The smell of smoke lead Rockford firefighters to an abandoned home.

The department says it received a call for a smoke odor in the area of Fitch Road and Kishwaukee Street just before 3:30, Sunday morning. Crews found smoke coming from a vacant home and extinguished the flames they saw in the front room.

No word yet on what sparked the fire. It caused about $5 thousand in damage.
