Fire crews say ‘spontaneous combustion’ was cause for garage fire in Winnebago

WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Fire crews responded to a garage fire at 5:04 a.m. Monday morning at 903 Gregory Way.

Win-Bur-Sew officials say the homeowner was inside the house at the time and smelled smoke before calling Winnebago police to extinguish the flames.

Multiple departments were then called to help assist.

While the cause is still under investigation, Win-Bur-Sew officials say burning patterns show it was likely the result of oily rags left inside the garage without drying, causing them to spontaneously combust.

“[The homeowner] was just kinda piling them in a bucket so they were able to heat up kinda cook and develop into a fire,” Chief Dave Loria said. “You want to air them out or throw them in a bucket of water or something so they don’t combust.”

Chief Loria said the homeowner was using the rags for staining the deck the day before.

Firefighters say there were no injuries.
