An Illinois resident has died from West Nile virus, the first such death this year.
The Illinois Department of Public Heath said the Kankakee County resident tested positive for the disease and died earlier this month. No further information on the victim was released.
Last year there were six deaths from West Nile in Illinois. So far in 2017, there have been 37 human cases of West Nile in the state.
Health experts recommend to protect yourself from the virus by using insect repellant and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly during the hours between dusk and dawn.
