Former U.S. Congressman and Peoria native Bob Michel has died at the age of 93.

Michel represented the 18th District from 1957-1995. He served as the Minority Whip during part of his time in office. Michel was a graduate of Peoria High School and Bradley University.

Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL 17th) issued the following statement

“Whether it was his courageous service in World War II, his work to strengthen Illinois or his bipartisan approach to leadership in Congress, Bob Michel was one of Peoria’s best. Bob Michel proved that if Democrats and Republicans are willing to reach across the aisle and work together, then we can achieve great things for the people we serve. I join with all Peorians in giving thanks for the example he set and offering my heartfelt condolences to his friends, family and loved ones.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL 16th) also issued a statement which read in part:

“Bob Michel, a member of the ‘Greatest Generation,’ loved his country and this great institution, and he served us proudly.  Our country is better for having the courage, patriotism and leadership of The Honorable Bob Michel – and I, like so many others, will continue to be inspired by the legacy he leaves behind.  I extend my deepest condolences to his children, family and friends, and the entire Peoria community.”
