It’s been five years since Rockford’s Singer Mental Health Center closed due to state budget cuts. Now, social media brings the center back into the spotlight.
A Facebook group called “Abandoned Places in Illinois and Southern Wisconsin” posted several photos on its page. They show syringes that were never removed from the center, all over the floor. Another picture shows trash in a hallway and pieces of the wall ripping apart. The outside didn’t fare any better. Weeds have almost overtaken one of the entrances.
Eyewitness News reached out for comment to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, which owns the building. A spokesman said it’s aware of the vandalism and trespassing at the center. The agency is working with security personnel and police to protect the building.
