A Freeport man was arrested on charges of claiming to be a police officer and allegedly trying to extort money.

Police say Tyler Dale, 36, was arrested for calling a Freeport man and pretending to be a Freeport Police officer, claiming he had evidence linking the victim to a felony crime. Dale then allegedly attempted to extort $5,000 from the victim in exchange for criminal charges not being filed.

Dale was arrested during a traffic stop on the same day a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He was charged with 3 counts of False Impersonation of a Peace Officer, Intimidation, and Attempted Theft.

Dale is being held at the Stephenson County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
