This Independence Day is being called “historic” when it comes to Americans traveling, with Friday already being considered the busiest travel day of the year in Illinois.
A record-breaking 44.2 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for the holiday weekend. That’s 1.25 million more travelers than last year. 2017 will be marked as the most traveled Independence Day holiday weekend ever, according to AAA.
The Illinois Tollway says it expects eight million vehicles on their roads over the extended weekend, including 2.1 million on Friday alone. On an average day, about 1.6 million vehicles use the Illinois Tollway. That makes today the busiest day on Illinois roadways thus far in 2017.
“Travel bookings are up nearly 12% in Illinois and more than 31% in Indiana compared to this time last year,” said Vicky Evans, Assistant Vice President, Travel Sales Development, AAA.
The biggest factors driving the increase are low gas prices, strong employment, rising incomes and consumer confidence.
