This week the morning team is focusing on ways to get outside and enjoy Summer. Tuesday we went out to Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere.
Heading to the zoo is always a fun adventure for kids, and this one is right off of I-90 in our own ‘backyard.’ Summerfield is a local zoo that features a variety of animals, from alligators, to mountain lions, ring tail lemurs, monkeys, reindeer, and now two baby zebras.
The zoo also takes in rescue animals, which is how they became the home of their newest addition, a baby zebra. The zoo is open Wednesday through Sunday, and is closed Monday and Tuesday during the summer. Summerfield zoo is also a ‘hands-on’ learning environment for kids. They feature weekly summer camps for kids through the summer and host field trips where kids can learn more about the animals and prepare enrichment for them.
Summerfield also has a way for kids to get an up-close experience with a few of their animals with their ‘animal encounters’! There’s also a petting zoo, kids can feed bottles to their baby goats, or try out a pony ride.
Summerfield’s newest addition, a river otter exhibit, will be opening soon!
