Fundraiser Held for Winnebago Family Who Lost Home in Fire

News

A Winnebago family lost their home in a fire two weeks ago. Monday night, the community stepped up to help them out.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted a fundraiser at Culver’s. For three hours, the restaurant pledged to donate a portion of its sales to the Decker family.

A fire destroyed their home on March 30th. An Illinois State Trooper driving down Route 20 saw the blaze and alerted the family. Everyone was able to get out, however, the Decker’s pets were treated for breathing smoke.

One of the family members is on Winnebago High School’s Varsity Football team. A teacher at the school says he’s proud that his neighbors are being so generous.

“Everybody came together, as a unit not only the team, but the school and the whole community as you can see,” said David Stack. “I felt really good that there’s people out there who really care for him as a teammate, as a brother.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
