Aneetra Martin and two of her children embraced outside of their Rockford home after receiving two much-needed new beds.
Choice Furniture and Eyewitness News partnered to offer families in need the chance to receive brand new furniture as part of a way to give back during the holidays.
Martin’s mother entered her into the contest because she’s been sharing her bed with her kids.
“(My daughter) lost her bed, because it split in the middle, and (my son) outgrew his. And I had been trying to just say, you know, ‘We’ll get it, we’ll get it’. But my mom didn’t want them to wait,” said Martin.
Martin’s family is one of 20 receiving brand new furniture. Choice Furniture’s CEO Fadi Sahouri is personally going through over 300 submissions to hand-pick the families he believed needed the gift most, a process he says was difficult after he realized how little some of them had.
“I’ve gone into people’s homes where they really don’t have anything to sit on. I mean, they don’t have any mattresses. They’re just literally on the floor,” said Sahouri.
At another home in Machesney Park, bunk beds were delivered and assembled for two little girls whose parents are in addiction recovery.
The couple doing better, but need a little help getting back on their feet.
“We came here, and it’s a nice house,” said the couple’s son, Amado Campos. “We’ve got everything we need, we just didn’t have beds for the girls. So we would just have them either sleep in here, or the little one would come sleep in my room.”
And at yet another home, a disabled man got a brand new recliner after repairing the same hand-me-down recliner for nearly a decade.
“We had been trying to get a new chair and just couldn’t find the funds to get one and finally it came true,” said recipient James Evans
Sahouri says many of the family’s stories made him emotional in what he calls an eye-opening experience.
“It lets you see that what you have is really…you’re blessed. We’re all blessed.”
