A newly released Gallup Poll shows that only about 1-in-3 people in Illinois approve of President Trump’s job performance going into his first ‘State of the Union’ address. In Wisconsin, a state Trump won in the 2016 election, 41% approve of his performance, which is slightly above the national average of 38%.
The state where Trump is most popular is West Virginia at 61% according to Gallup, while he is least popular in Vermont at 26%. His popularity in the District of Columbia was also polled and is at 6%.
The results are based on 171,469 Gallup Daily tracking interviews conducted from January-December 2017, which does make the data potentially dated. However, according to the website ‘Real Clear Politics’, Trump’s approval ratings when averaging several polls together have remained relatively steady at around 40% approval, 55% disapproval during his first year in office.
It’s the lowest first year approval numbers in Gallup’s history and an obvious concern for Republicans, yet it also contains within it warning signs for Democrats heading into the 2018 midterm elections. In three of the states where Trump is most popular, West Virginia, Montana and North Dakota, Gallup notes that incumbent Democratic U.S. Senators are up for re-election, potentially increasing Republicans’ majority in that chamber.
It’s also worth noting that President Trump has never polled well. The week before the 2016 election, Gallup had Trump’s approval rating at 35%, an election which he won. The highest approval rating the poll has given Trump during his presidency is 46% on January 24, 2017.
