Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has pledged to change the way the stat approaches gun violence.
Pritzker made the promise in Chicago at the “Cities Striving for Peace” public forum.
The event brought together mayors from big cities that have had success in lowering gun violence.
The Governor touted the recently established “Justice, Equality and Opportunity” initiative, which aims to ensure that gun violence is treated as a public health issue. The initiative also encourages modern sentencing for low level drug crimes and rebuild the trust between communities and law enforcement.
“We’re going to work together to end the violence that has destroyed so many communities and taken too many lives,” Pritzker said. “It’s time to build a system of justice that reflects our values and allows all Illinoisians to thrive.”
The initiative will be led by Lieutenant Governor Julia Stratton.
