Rep. Jeannie Ives (R-Wheaton), who is challenging Gov. Bruce Rauner for the Republican nomination for Governor of Illinois, will appear at a pro-Trump ‘Make America Great Again’ rally in Rockford on Tuesday rally organizers’ say.
The event, which will be held at Giovanni’s, will also include the Republican primary challenger to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL 16th), James Marter, and the Republican challenger to House Speaker and Janesville Republican Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI 1st), Paul Nehlen.
Other candidates for office as well as conservative authors, radio talk show hosts and members of various conservative think tanks will among those who will also attend the event. Former White House Chief Strategist and current Executive Chairman Breitbart News Steve Bannon has been invited but is unlikely to attend.
While not an official ‘Trump for President’ campaign event, the makeup of the MAGA Rockford event is indicative of both the divide and the direction of the Republican Party. It epitomizes the ‘grass-roots’ effort underway to defeat more so-called ‘establishment Republicans’ who are seen by some in the party as not supportive enough of the President’s agenda. The impending retirements of Republicans who have been critical of President Trump such as Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) is seen by some as the evolving of the GOP towards ‘Trump-ism’.
State Rep. Ives has not been explicit in her support of the President, but has been highly critical of Gov. Rauner, especially in light of his decision to sign legislation which expanded abortion rights statewide.
The event runs from 3pm-9pm at Giovanni’s with a pro-Trump rally scheduled for 7pm, and is free to the public.
