Governor Expected to Sign Motor Voter Bill

Governor Bruce Rauner (R-IL) is expected to sign a bill to make voter registration automatic when residents apply for or renew a driver’s license.

He vetoed similar legislation last year, citing concerns the original bill allowed people to register regardless of eligibility and that it lacked adequate protections against voter fraud.

Right now, voters have to ‘opt in’ at the DMV.  Under this bill, residents would be signed up to vote at the  Registration line unless they ‘opt out’.  Visits to the Secretary of State’s Office and other state agencies could also lead to registration.

The revised bill based in part on the Governor’s recommendations passed unanimously and will go into effect immediately after Rauner signs it.
