Gov. Bruce Rauner (R-IL) extends how long families have to report violent crimes.

He signed Molly’s Law Tuesday.  The law, named after Molly Young, an SIU student who was found dead inside a Carbondale apartment in 2012, allows more time for a victim’s family to file a wrongful death lawsuit where the act is intentional and violent.

The measure also penalizes public bodies $100,000 per day if they don’t comply with a court order following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The law goes into effect immediately.
