A local grade school student raised enough money to ensure Rockford Police’s K9 officers get some much needed protection.
Rockford Christian School 5th Grader Keylee Cortese was hoping to raise enough money to buy a protective vest for K9 Sully, but police say that, between Keylee’s donation and donations from private individuals over the last couple of years, they’ll be able to buy vests for all six K9’s
K9 Unit Sergeant Duane Johnson said the vests are a necessary protection for the canine officers.
“For example, we had the Dollar Tree incident with that interrputed armed robbery a few weeks ago. We actually did send the dog…in. We knew that the suspect was armed with a hand gun, and those situations, when there’s a high risk or high chance that maybe the dog could be injured, we will put a vest on the dog,” said Johnson.
Keylee says she made the effort because she likes dogs, and wanted to protect them because they protect us.
