A report of what Rockford Police first believed was an attempted armed robbery at a barber shop is now being investigated as an aggravated assault.
It happened when two men, one armed with a handgun, walked into the ‘Top-Notch Cutz’ barber shop in the 1500 block of 7th St. just after noon on Wednesday. Police say there were several customers in the shop at the time, but the two black males approached a specific customer and pointed the gun at him.
The gunmen then left after assaulting the victim in a dark green BMW SUV and also a dark gray sedan with tinted windows. The victim fled the scene before police arrived.
There was no robbery, and no one else was hurt, and a motive for the assault is unclear.
A shooting outside the same barber shop in May lead to the death of a Rockford man. 26-year-old James Tomlinson was shot and killed as he left the barber shop and was attempting to get into his car. No arrests in that murder have been made.
