Dressing up for prom and walking across the stage for a high school graduations are rites of passage most look forward to during their teenage years, but one local Harlem student may not live to see hers. So instead of waiting, one group is making she has a prom and graduation by throwing her her own. Complete with friends, a first dance and a drag queen show, Izabella Sotelo’s prom is one for the books.
“I’m just really happy because I don’t know how much time I have so I’m just trying to make the most out of it”, said Izabella.
Izabella or izzy to those close to her is on hospice care due to a failing liver, a side effect to her Polycystic Ovarian Cysts Syndrome. MercyHealth’s Hospice is granting all of Izzy’s wishes from graduating early to have a prom fit for a queen.
“I think it helps them and the family to know that the things they wanted to do, they could do”, said Maria from MercyHealth.
“I would like to thank all of the community, the cards, the support, and just everything together and just making this event possible. Because for my only child, it’s a wish come true. It’s one of her bucket list,”,said Tammie Cogdill, Izzy’s mother.
Thanks to the Rockton Inn and Pub and some fabulous queens, Izzy’s prom is one to remember. The teen says she experienced bulling for being a nerd but now she wants people to remember her for her giving spirit.
“I was always trying to be there for people because I always wanted to be a counselor and help people through their problems because I was always bullied,” said Izzy. Sh continues, “it paid off I was top in my class. Top 5%.”
Also on Izabella’s wish list, a ride in a Dodge Charger like her hero Vin Diesel. And she went fast and furious on the way to her to graduation. But just how fast did she go?
“We shall not speak about that just over the speed limit let’s say that”, said Izzy.
