Health Department Holds Shigellosis Outbreak Meeting

The Winnebago County Health Department held a special meeting to discuss the area’s Shigellosis outbreak.

Shigellosis is an intestinal disease caused by a bacterial family known as shigella.

Daycare directors, school officials, and pediatricians were among those who gathered to learn more both about the symptoms and ways to prevent the illness from spreading.  Health officials say hand hygiene is key and adults should even consider supervising children to make sure they’re washing their hands.

“Teach them proper hand washing techniques because [that’s] going to get rid of this outbreak,” said Todd Kisner of the Winnebago County Health Department.  “We can simply wash our hands and wash this down the drain.”

The Shigellosis outbreak has been ongoing for seven months.
