Heavy Rain Causes Street Flooding Across Area

News

In a storm which brought wall clouds, tornado warnings and severe thunderstorms with lightning, it was the heavy rains which brought the most havoc.

Inch after inch of pouring rain created significant street flooding issues, especially in the Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park area, bringing a flash flood warning for most of the night and early morning hours.

Parts of Windsor Road in Loves Park, for instance, saw entire blocks of roadways covered with inches of water, especially by the curbs, where vehicles were forced to go slow, and some didn’t make it at all, bringing an emergency response.  It was just one of several roadways were cars could be found stalled on streets with high water all across the Stateline.

In Rockford, Charles Street at 20th was blocked off for a time due to high water, which is a frequent problem in that area when heavy rains come.

At one point, flooding became such an issue the Rockford Police Department put out a text alert asking people to stay home.

Before the heavy rain came, high winds knocked out power to as many as 13,000 area customers according to ComEd.  Power also knocked out to stoplights on major highways such as Routes 2 and 173 in the Machesney Park area.
