ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday in 1971, to recognize servicemen who paid the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for our country and freedom.

Government offices and banks will be closed today.

UPS, FedEx and USPS will not be picking up or delivering mail.

And the DMV will be closed.

Grocery stores, restaurants, and fast food chains will remain open. Here’s a list of stores open on Memorial Day.
