Nearly 600 runners and walkers laced up their shoes for the 4th Annual Veterans 5K Run/Walk.
The event was held at Sportscore One’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. The run benefits the non-profit Veterans Drop-In Center in Rockford. The center provides a place for veterans and their families to gather and meet with their peers.
Apart from being a place to meet, the center also offers dinner, free haircuts and meetings with VA and vet center representatives, all free of charge.
“We basically feel that veterans who take a big part of their life out to be in the military, sometimes we think they get a little forgotten,” said Brad Born, member of the Veterans 5K race committee. “This is just a great event to honor what they’ve done for our country.”
All the money for the center comes from donations and events like the run.
