The bad feelings Winnebago County residents have for a proposed rail line are still at a fever pitch.
Hundreds packed the stands at Winnebago High School. Most of those in attendance are against the Great Lakes Basin Railroad Project, which would run a freight line from Lee County into rural Winnebago County, then north to Wisconsin. One resident told Eyewitness News the tracks will be less than half a mile from his home.
“THe fact that it’s going to carry fuels, petroleum, chemicals… I don’t like the number of trains, the speed of the trains, [and] how they’re going to block the roads that I use,” said Dustin Kaap.
Two similar meetings have already been held this month in Shirland and Rockton, as well as a protest. There’s also an online petition. 785 people have signed it.
