‘Eyewitness News’ is getting reports of a number of accidents in the area, some potentially serious, due to light rain freezing on area roadways.
As of 6pm, Riverside Boulevard between Gustafson and Aberdeen was completely blocked after a report of a crash involving several vehicles.
Emergency crews have also been called to Rt. 173 and Belvidere Road for a report of a serious crash at that intersection.
Our crew in Boone County says roads are extremely icy out there, and untreated rural roads will be particularly hazardous.
I-43 in Rock County near the I-39/90 interchange also has one lane closed headed towards Milwaukee at 6:30pm after a weather related crash. They expect to have it cleared by 8:30pm.
In Freeport, Pretzel City Cab suspended all operations Wednesday night because of hazardous driving conditions. There have also been a few emergency for people who have fallen in their driveways or on sidewalks.
Parts of the Stateline area are under a freezing rain advisory until 9am Thursday, and ‘Eyewitness News’ Chief Meteorologist Candice King has moved the ‘Weatherisk’ weather alert system to ‘High’ because of potentially dangerous icing on roadways. However, she is not expecting any ice accumulation overnight.
City of Rockford roads crews were out early at 4:30pm with pre-salting operations in preparation for possibly icing conditions.
