TOWN OF BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — Nice weather means spring cleaning, and in some cases, illegal dumping.
Officials in the Town of Beloit say people have been dumping used electronics and furniture illegally along the roadways, an annoying issue they say needs to stop.
“I would never expect someone to dump trash in my yard,” said Joe Rose, Director of Public Works.
Rose says illegal dumping happens a lot in the Spring.
“People are cleaning out their basements, or their garage, as the weather gets nicer,” Rose said.
Rose says Public Works ends up cleaning the debris, but not all municipalities are able to clean up entire communities.
“Generally, some of the neighboring communities require that the land owner takes care of that, or they could be fined,” he said.
Anyone caught disposing of items illegally could face fines upward of $1,000.
There are several recycle facilities where items can be legally disposed of, including Universal Recycling in Janesville.
Universal Recycling’s plant manager, Randy Call, says proper disposal is better for the environment.
“It’s not going to end up in a landfill. It’s not going to end up thrown away. The plastic, the wire, the precious metals will all get recycled and are beneficially re-used somewhere down the line,” he said.
Call also believes that the responsibility lies with the individual to keep communities clean.
“This state, this country, wherever you’re doing this at, it’s all our land. It’s all our environment, and if we keep that type of stuff out of the ditches and out of the landfills, it’s going to be great for us and for future generations,”
