A Stateline lawmaker’s bill on enforcing law against sex crimes is gaining traction in Springfield.
Bill HB 6135 would require independent investigators to handle any cases where a law enforcement officer is accused of sexual assault. Rep. Litesa Wallace (D) is sponsoring the bill.
“This bill is an effort to ensure transparency and allow fair investigations when claims are made that a police officer engaged in inappropriate conduct,” Wallace said. “In the event of a sexual assault involving an officer, this will provide a survivor an option that has more oversight and increased transparency of the investigative process.”
The bill passed a House committee last Thursday and now moves on to the House floor for consideration.
