Illinois couples can update marriage licenses to remove ‘gender identifiers’

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois will become the second state in America to allow couples to update their marriage licenses with gender-neutral identifiers.

The Illinois General Assembly passed the “Marriage Certificate Modernization Act” which allows couples to request a marriage certificate from their county clerk without gender identifying language.

This includes changing words like “bride” and “groom” to “spouse.”

The law will go into effect in January 2022.
