Illinois is closer to raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

The House passed the measure 61-53.  The proposal would phase in the increase over the next five years and will only apply to workers at least 18 years old.

Supporters say the plan will help working people make ends meet.  Opponents, though, say it’ll hurt businesses and make the state less competitive.  It’s unclear if the Governor will sign it.
