The U.S. Census bureau ranked Illinois 2nd among the nine states that lost the most population from July 2017 to July 2018.

There are 45,000 fewer people living in Illinois this year.

The only state that lost more residents was New York.

West Virginia, Louisiana, Hawaii, Mississippi, Alaska, Connecticut and Wyoming rounded out the remainder of the list.

Census experts say many states have seen fewer births and more deaths in recent years, which may have contributed to the population decline.
