The son of Illinois Sen. Dave Syverson (R) is in jail for alleged sexual abuse of a child under 13.

27-year-old Jordan David Syverson is charged with sexual exploitation of a child, exposing himself, aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under 13, and for a sexually exploiting a child involving a sex act., according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office

Syverson was booked into the Winnebago County Jail Wednesday on a $20,000 bond.

Sen. Dave Syverson said, “Mental illness is a frustrating thing. We’ve dealt with our son on mental illness issues since he was very young and unfortunately, the way the laws are, when a person reaches 21, there’s very little we can do. At this point we really don’t know the details of what happened, but it just drives home the point, in all those families that have had loved ones in the same situation, they understand this, that it’s very frustrating, that people with mental illness are out there. And as families, we have very little that we can do to try and help them.So I guess I just ask for people to understand that there’s severe mental illness [that Jordan has suffered for] many years, and we’re working with law enforcement to [get him] the treatment he needs,”
