At 9:45pm Saturday, an Illinois State Trooper was struck and killed while investigating a traffic accident.
Police say Trooper Christopher Lambert, 34, had stopped to investigate a three-car crash on the northbound side on Interstate 294, near mile marker 49.
“He sees a three-vehicle crash, he positions his vehicle in the left-hand lanes so to save the lives of those people in the crash,” Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said. “He was struck and lost his life while he was doing that.”
WGN-TV reported that Lambert, a five year veteran of the state police, was struck by a Jeep traveling north.
A nurse at the scene performed CPR on Lambert until paramedics arrived.
He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 7:25 p.m.
Lambert leaves behind a 1-year-old child.
