NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WTVO) — A town in the Chicago suburbs has voted to ban the sale of most assault weapons.

The Naperville City Council passed the ordinance overnight by a vote of 8-1. It does not ban the sale of high-capacity magazines for handguns, and does not affect the sales of high-powered rifles to members of law enforcement or the military.

The new ordinance takes effect on January 1.
